Academy Intro Page

The 2012/13 season sees the beginning of our rugby Academy.

Who’s included?

All the players, regardless of ability, from three age groups will join the Academy, U16, U17 and the Colts, and will benefit from access to additional coaching and support from both within the club and from invited coaches.

Why?

In recent years, the likes of Alex Goode (Saracens and England), Luke Fielden (Falcons) and now Will Hooley (Saints) have come through M & Y, while Ben Spencer (Saracens) and  Toby Berridge (Doncaster Knights), came to the club as 18 year olds, playing in both the Wanderers and the 1st team, before progressing their rugby careers. We’d like to see more of our players move through the playing ranks to senior rugby either at first team level or in the ‘social’ sides, expanding the pool of players for the Exiles or establishing new sides like the Adventurers or re-establishing teams like the Vanguards.

How will Academy players benefit?

Academy players will have access to the same support received by the 1stXV and Wanderers , nutrition information, dedicated strength and conditioning resource and dedicated physiotherapy support. All for free!!!

The Academy coaching teams for the 3 age groups work closely with club Head Coach Glen Remnant and his team, with the Colts training with the senior squad from preseason onwards and U17s being introduced during the later part of the season.

Who will I play for?

The 3 age groups will continue to play as separate teams but we see the opportunity for players to play up age groups when ready.

How else will a player in the Academy benefit?

Our separate sponsorship monies will help us add to the clubs coaching expertise by inviting external coaches to deliver skill or specific phase sessions during the season for the whole Academy. Plus players will be provided with special Academy kit from our sponsors.

Taking PE at AS and A2 level?

You will also benefit from the Academy in the coursework element of those programmes as we work with local schools to provide support at the club.
