CRUFC U16s 16 - 22 Saracens A

A chilly morning but thankfully no frozen pitch to greet the Saracens A team for the first meeting in a couple of years. A sleepy start by Cambridge and good kicking by Saracens led to a lineout just short of the Cambridge line, and an early try for Saracens, 0 – 5.
The next 15 minutes saw most of the action in the Cambridge half, but Cambridge were not intimidated and responded with strong rucking, methodically working their way up the pitch to the Saracens 22, to camp there for 5 minutes. Sadly an opportunity that was not converted when a neat little “up and over” kick from Saracens let them run the length of the field for a try in the corner, 0 – 10.
Cambridge kept their chin up and were rewarded with a penalty from Sam Segameglio to finish the first half at 3 – 10.
Undeterred Cambridge came back quickly in the 2nd minute of the 2nd half with a try by Felix Rathbone, converted by Sam Segameglio, 10 – 10.
Ten minutes of fairly even play then ended with a classic kick and chase from Saracens for their 3rd try, 10 – 17.
The next 10 minutes saw two more penalties to Cambridge bringing the score to a tantalising 16 – 17. So close, but sadly Cambridge conceded one final try in the last minute to finish the game 16 – 22.
A very enjoyable and good natured game for players and spectators alike, and it is worth remembering that at the last meeting Cambridge trailed by about 50 points, so a performance to take heart from.
