You may have noticed the Smiley faces on the 1st team shirts this season. This is the Club's tribute to Joe Herrington, an active member of the M&Y section, playing at U14 in the 2010-11 season.
The Smiley came about as Brad and Daniela, Joe's parents, were arranging Joe's funeral. Daniela wanted to wear something that reminded her of Joe. He had an ever present smile, in fact the older kids nicknamed him smiler when he first went to secondary school. In a lot of comments and cards from people who knew him his smile was mentioned, so Daniela chose to wear a smiley badge to remember him. Soon everyone attending Joe's funeral, including the vicar, was wearing their Smiley, and Smileys were sent out to the many friends and relatives that could not attend.
Now Brad and Daniela have started the Joe Herrigton Memorial Fund through CRY (Cardiac Arrest in the Young), with Smileys being sold raise money. This raises money to be able to provide heart screening for local young people. The sad statistic is that there are at least 12 young people between the ages of 14-35 that die each week from SADS (Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome).
So far £20,000 has been raised, enough to fund 3 private screenings for 100 people at each screening. The first two screenings will be 19/20th January 2013 at Chesterton Community College. If you are aged between 14-35 and connected with CRUFC you can book your screening here.
