Joe Herrington

The Cambridge U14s and the wider club have recently suffered a terrible loss. Joe Herrington, a Cambridge U14 player and County ‘A’ team member collapsed and died while playing with his younger brother on Good Friday.

Joe came to Cambridge RUFC three years ago; having played very little rugby before, but his quiet humour, infectious enthusiasm and constant smile soon made him a firm part of the squad.  He learned quickly and spent many an hour of his spare time relentlessly practicing his skills so that he soon became a regular fixture either as prop or hooker, though the latter became his preferred position.  At the County trials last autumn, Joe impressed the coaches enough to secure a place in the County ‘A’ team and he went on to represent the County against Suffolk and Norfolk.  Joe led by example: hard working, courageous and always eager to learn and improve.

Joe’s family are devastated by his sudden, untimely death. The U14 squad and wider club have been rallying around to offer support where we can.  Tributes have been coming from far and wide, a most touching comment from our old foe at Shelford, showing how the camaraderie of rugby transcends club loyalty.  Joe’s younger brother will be on the pitch today collecting his colours for the season, his proud father watching as ever.

In memory of Joe, we dedicate today’s match to him, and ask you to share a minutes silence after the presentation of mini squad colours, and immediately before kick-off, to remember Joe’s short but inspirational life.  Many of his fellow players will be gathered on the pitch to reflect on what a privilege it has been to share in Joe’s life.
