Bury Colts snatch victory at death
Close encounter between two well matched teams sees Cambridge miss out to a last gasp effort from Bury
In the first of a 3 way fixture against Bury St Edmunds and Thetford, Cambridge were just edged out by a last minute try from Bury.
An exciting first game against Bury had everything. Cambridge, buoyed by their second half showing against Woodbridge two weeks ago, started where they had left off in that fixture. Excellent defence and some positive attack play put the visitors on the front foot for most of the first period. Bury made a number of mistakes which Cambridge were happy to turn into attack. Slightly against the run of play however, it was the home team that got on the score sheet first.

Not put off by the scoreline, Cambridge ripped into the home side. Taking the game to them at every opportunity. Finally rewarded with an excellent 8, 9, 15 move in the left hand corner, with Max Stubbings touching down for the score. Conversion missed. Game tied and finely balanced.
The visitors didn't get much luck when trying to find the winning score. After a prolonged period of some fantastic defending on their line, Cambridge were able to turn over the ball and in attempting to clear their lines from the set piece that resulted, missed touch and gifted Bury the a golden chance to score out wide where the Cambridge defence was stretched.
A disappointing way to end the game, but with the shortened format there was no time to respond. It was another encouraging performance and the signs are there that this team can really play.
