Cambridge U14 and Saffron Waldon in hard fought match; SW come out on top.

Cambridge U14 -24 v Saffron Waldon - 53

Cambridge travelled to Saffron Walden for the first leg of the County Cup. A perfect day for a good rugby match: sunny but with a definite hint of winter in the air.

The first half was very close, with Cambridge responding quickly to the first SW converted try with a try of its own from Keon. SW scored again without converting, and Cambridge countered with a good team play that culminated in passing the ball to Cassidy, who made a fantastic display of speed to score under the post, with Ben Miller converting the try. With all to play for, SW managed to score another couple of tries, but the sense was that all was to still play for and the match was within Cambridge’s grasp.

The second half started well, with Cambridge putting pressure on SW in the first 5 minutes, but a slight loss of concentration enabled SW to pull ahead thanks to a couple of lucky bounces. Despite the now heavy score, there was a sense of wanting to close the gap. However, Cambridge became untidy, despite winning most of the rucks and own scrums; SW made the most of some unfinished tackles, and the score ran away. Cambridge did not stop playing though, and in the closing part of the match scored two more tries, one by Cassidy who yet again showed how fast he can be, and the other by Ben Miller who finished off a great team play.

All in all, Cambridge did score some brilliant tries, more than matched SW at the breakdown and in the scrum, but paid dearly the loss of focus and concentration. We believe that the final score is not a fair reflection of the values demonstrated by the two teams on the pitch. The players should be proud of the way they played and of the skills and quality of play demonstrated, but they have to take the result as an example of how distraction and loss of focus can be exploited by good teams.
