November 11th a day for remembrance saw Cambridge travel to Haverhill. The minutes silence impeccably observed by both sides and the spectators.

This was the return league fixture in this season, when Haverhill visited us they came even though they had only 11 players and we supplied the rest. So it was good to see them being able to field a full squad with I assume some of the injured returning to play. It was also good to be able to use an extended squad to give people game time.

After 2 bruising encounters, in many ways, against Shelford and Thurston who are deservedly 1& 2 in the league, we were a little beat up ourselves and were pleased that Jack and Dan stepped in to help out in the front row. This was possibly, depending on what fixture we can get next week, Mike Burnford’s last game of the season as he heads for foot surgery, we will miss him. Seb became our 6th fly half of the season and the first time for him?

10:30 minute a centre break saw the ball go right Julian who fed Jack who powered in from the 22 0-7 Seb kicking the conversion.
12:48 minute with the ball going out on the full from the kick off the resulting scrum saw Chris go right from the base, he was caught but fed to Jack who crashed it in from the Haverhill 10m
0-14 Seb converting
35 minute after a period of prolonged pressure, the ball went right to Alex in the 22, who put a strong run in to score in the corner
0-19 Seb missing with the conversion.
Straight from the kick off, a Bernie run saw a wayward pass bounce into Etienne hands which also wrong dotted the defence and he was able to run it in beating the cover defence to score under the posts 0-26 Seb converting

Wholesale changes at half time and a very much more even game with Haverhill making some strong runs and exerting pressure in the scrum. However our d fence was much better than the last 2 weeks and they were restricted to a penalty.
From a long clearing kick in our 22, a good kick chase saw the Haverhill clearing kick end up in midfield, Dan caught the ball and ran through the defense to score. Seb missing with the conversion, 3- 31
More pressure and poor ball retention by Cambridge saw Haverhill gain another penalty
6-31
Having had success with a very long lineout throw to midfield, Haverhill attempted to repeat but Etienne read the play beautifully and took the ball on the full to run it in under the posts, ( video is on the Facebook group page) Seb converted.
Final score 6-38.

So a return to winning ways, but not back to the heights of the early part of the season. Slightly puzzling for the coaching team but I’m sure we will find things to work on in Training.

Only one photo this week, your correspondent awarded him self “Dick of the day” for forgetting to put his memory card back into the camera. Fines were levied as well!
