Cambridge Rugby Shield

Jan 13

On behalf of the Committee, we are extremely pleased and excited to announce the appointments of Rowland Winter as our Director of Rugby and Craig Newby as our 1st XV Coach!

Rowland Winter

rowland winterIn his five years at Northampton Saints, Rowland Winter has built up a coaching CV which includes a Divisional Championship title with Midlands Under-20 and working with the club’s upcoming stars in the Elite Player Development Group and AASE programme based at Moulton College. As Community Manager, Winter has also established a number of programmes which have won national awards and played a key role in the growth and development of the Saints’ Premiership Rugby Academies, which take place throughout the east of England.

An RFU accredited selector and with a first class honours Sports Science degree to his name, Rowland joins Cambridge from Bedford Athletic, where as head coach he turned around a club that had been relegated and was at risk of folding, to becoming one that is on the verge of promotion to the National Leagues and now has a thriving adult section, with feeder links to Bedford Blues.

In his role Rowland will also assist Craig as the backs coach.

Craig Newby

craig newbyBorn in Rotorua, New Zealand Craig’s playing credentials speak for themselves. As a back-row all-rounder he won a Commonwealth Games gold medal with New Zealand Sevens and played most of his provincial rugby at blindside or No8, but earned his All Black caps as an open side flanker, making his debut against England at Eden Park in 2004. Craig has played for and skippered Auckland Blues, the Highlanders, Otago and Leicester and had it not been for a knee injury would still be playing today. Craig works at Pitsford School and is an active member of the Leicester Tigers Community Coaching Team.

Craig joins Cambridge on his journey to becoming a Premiership Coach. He brings with him a wealth of playing experience and having been coached and “skippered” at such high levels is looking to pass on his experience to a young and talented squad.

We hope that you are as excited as we are of the prospect of this new coaching partnership. We believe that their strengths complement one another and that together they will be able to realise and consolidate the huge potential of our young and talented squad!

We look forward to introducing them to you all at Volac Park on Saturday 2nd February.
