Blues Academy 24 - 10 Wanderers U21s

A visit for a young Wanderers side to Bedford to take on their academy side started very promisingly with a converted try from Elliot Bale after just 10 minutes, followed by another 3 points a few minutes later. This gave the Wanderers a 10-0 lead which they held comfortably until just before the half time break when Bedford scored a try under the post, converted to leave the half time score 10-7.

Wanderers picked up more injuries than they would have liked, and with a number of changes fielded an even younger side in the second half particularly in the pack. Three tries to Bedford in the second half led to a final score of 24-10.

This was a first Wanderers outting for a number of 17-18 year old colts, Mike Brennan, Rhys Roberts and Mike Burnford, all of whom acquitted themselves well in a much quicker and physical game than they will face at the weekend in the UC u19s cup.

A very valuable experience against a well organized side.

Ely 1st XV 5 - 36 Wanderers

On a very cold night in Ely the Wanderers took on the Ely 1st XV in the quarter finals of the Cambridgeshire Cup, and came away with a comprehensive 36 - 5 win.

First half tries were scored by Will Hague-Blundy, Edd Thrower and Liam St. John, all converted by colt fly-half Josh Gray. With only one try concession this left the half time score at 21-5.

In the second half Edd Thrower added a second try to his tally, along with tries from Gareth Baxter and Tom Dougherty, leaving the final score at 36-5.

Keys to the win were a very dominant scrum, with most Cambridge penetration and try success achieved when we managed play several phases and work the ball wide out into space.

A special mention must go out to two Colts, Josh Gray and Conor Gracey making their senior debuts.

Wanderers now qualify for the semi-final against Shelford Nomads (their development squad) at Shelford on Friday 8th March. Come along and support. Dress warm.

Wanderers 25 - 29 Bishops Stortford II

This was the first game of the new year for the Wanderers, but there was no Christmas hangover as they started the stronger of the two sides. Wanderers showed good organization allowing them to move the ball wide, leading to openings for Dylan Powell and Will McGahey to score tries giving a 10-0 lead. After a Bishops Stortford penalty the same pattern of play again released Andy Howard to score. Wanderers 15-3 in the lead.

An unfortunate try conceded from a missed Bishops Stortford penalty brought the score back to 15-10, before Hal Sparke, playing in the back row, scored in the corner to give the Wanderers a 20-10 lead at the end of the very satifactory half of rugby.

The second half continued in the same vein with Matt Dunn rumbling over to score his first try for the club. 25-10.

Unfortunately the momentum couldn't be maintained for the remainder of game, with a 14 man Wanderers, after 2 yellow cards, unable to stop Bishops Stortford scoring 3 tries of their own, 2 of which were converted to lead to a full time score of 25-29.

There were many positives to take from this game. A good early start with well executed systems that got the ball wide and around the opposition. A strong scrum and a dominant lineout, which stole the ball on 8 occasions. A fine debut by Anders Teigland, a Norwegian international, on the wing. And a welcome return from injury by Bryn Jenkins who completed 50 minutes without side effects.

Bring on Shelford next Saturday, Volac Park, 12.30 ko.

Bedford II 51-27 Wanderers

A loss for the Wanderers against a Bedford side that fielded 5 first team players.  But plenty of encouragement with the second half performance seeing the second half tied 17 - 17.

See the Bedford match report here.

From this report, and a testiment to Ben Fitches pre-season program ...

All credit to Cambridge they did not let us take control and the second half was drawn 17pts all.

The last 10 minutes were all Cambridge’s with two tries narrowing the gap to 51 pts – 27
