Cambridge Rugby Shield

CRUFC U8s vs Stevenage

Bickley scores 5 and Howard 4 as a strong team effort from Cambridge sees off Stevenage’s determined challenge

Finally in 2013 the sun shone and the rugby was all the better for it. Stevenage were our visitors and despite only being able to field two sides they had some strong runners and pushed us to raise our game. All credit to both sets of players and their coaches for a good days rugby played in the spirit of the game. The final stats show played 6, won 5, lost 1 but that does not do justice to the teamwork and strong defence that Cambridge showed on the day.

Cambridge Darwin had a good day working well as a team and won both of their matches. The first against Stevenage A looks on paper as an easy game which Cambridge won 30 to 10 but the score hides the fact that twice Stevenage were in sight of the line only to be forced into an error. A brace of tries each for Will Mort and Jamie Chapman and one each for Atticus Fanshawe and Finlay Marsh. Cambridge Darwin’s game against Stevenage B proved to be a high scoring match with Cambridge winning 40 to 30 with the game still in doubt until the end. Thomas Bickley ran strongly to score 5 tries and another brace from Mort with a fine solo effort from Jack Howland to finish off.

Cambridge Trinity also put in a strong defensive effort to beat Stevenage A 35 to 25. A hat trick for Clark Macfarlane lead the way with one a piece for Kaden Dwinger, Teilo Astill-Murray, Thomas Whitehead and Ollie Myers. Their second game against Stevenage B was on a knife edge until the final whistle with Stevenage deserved winners by 25 to 20. A brace from Macfarlane, another from Myers and a final try by Noah Thain was just not enough on the day.

Cambridge Selwyn produced a great team effort to beat Stevenage B 25 to 10. A magnificent 4 tries came from the silky running of Jonny Howard and a fine solo effort from Thea Sylvester made up the points. In their second game against Stevenage A Selwyn built on their earlier good work to record another win by 30 to 15. This time a brace each for Howard and Sylvester with one each from George Mendham and Finlay Mitchell.
