Mini rugby for this age-group follows the new RFU principles – full contact, but with a few simplifications: the scrums are limited to five players (5vs5) and are uncontested, there is tackling, rucks and mauls with no limit on players,  but no line-outs and only tactical kicking.  The RFU new rules of play for mini rugby were introduced in 2012 to help children learn the fundamentals of the game in a sequential manner so that they can enjoy learning rugby skills and playing in competition matches, while still encouraging participation of all players without being confused by too many rules and without being restricted only to a particular position.  The U12 rules can be found here.
Our goal is for the children to learn rugby skills in a safe environment while still enjoying the competitive nature of the game. We focus on teamwork, spatial awareness, decision-making, discipline and sportsmanship, all within a safe environment. Our experience with the New RFU principles has been very positive: old and new players alike enjoy the game and are developing great rugby skills. At this stage of development we maximise participation of all players. While not using a formal streamed system for selection, we find that our teams are very competitive and we usually end up the season on top of most of our matches.
We have a fantastic group of children with over 40 players coming out on most Sundays. Coaching them is really rewarding, seeing them develop week on week. The coaches are all volunteers: there are twelve in total, six RFU Level 1 qualified and one RFU Level 2 qualified; three are also Eastern Counties qualified referees. We also have a great group of parents who come along to training each week and volunteer to help with many aspects of running the team. Last year we enjoyed our first tour to Somerset that was a huge success.  We hope to continue the tradition this year.  If you wish to get involved in any way, please contact Ken Seamon.
Our season starts on the first Sunday in September and finishes in April. We train every Sunday at 9.30am, with a break for Christmas and Easter. During the year we have plenty of regional matches and tournaments. Please come and see us on Sunday morning, or drop us a line for further information.
