Well this is awkward, our new web-site has been around a few weeks now and you haven't been formally introduced. I was waiting for the new web-site host to update their security certificate, but I just can't wait any longer. I am the club "geek" after all, at least according to Banksy.
So if you do get a security warning, live dangerously and ignore it until it gets resolved. Or instead bookmark crufc.rfu.club. If having done all this, you get a ghostly apparition of the old web-site then you'll need to clear your cache to see its reincarnation.
So why did we make a change?
We engaged with a number of design agencies to discuss our branding needs. What do you envisage when you hear "Cambridge Rugby"? What does the "Blood and Sand" mean to you? How do we position our club to embrace the 21st century while honouring our past? A few mood boards and focus groups later and here we are ...
Actually, we didn't do any of that. We just wanted a web-site free of intrusive advertising. And with the money we saved we invested in a different form of hot air; a new hand dryer for the gents. No more difficult-to-explain damp handshakes.
As you might have guessed from the url the new web-site platform is hosted by the RFU web-site providers. As such it is well integrated with the RFU's Game Management System (GMS) - the place where you buy your membership. You have bought your membership, haven't you? If not head here.
It also links directly with fixtures and results, which means league tables etc, should be updated soon after matches finish. Not only that but from these pages you can get simple player statistics. Here's how captain George's season is shaping up so far.
This also means it has access to historical records from the RFU database. How did we do in our first match of the new millennium? Click here to find out. Who knew there was a "London Nigerian" team by the way? You can thank me the next time that comes up in your pub quiz.
Speaking of history, I gave the history section a long overdue update. If you see any Fake News let me know - I haven't been around the club nearly as long as many of you.
One advantage of the new web-site is that it allows a bit more customisation than previously, such as the backdrop images. I'm sure most of you recognise the player on the left. Who is the up and coming rugby talent on the right? He's related to Cambridge Rugby royalty.
The web-site also enables richer content. Take our latest match report for example. In addition to words and a picture we can embed Jacko's interview, Chris's photos and also match highlights from our YouTube channel. Didn't know we had a YouTube channel? Well we didn't until 3 days ago, but you can find a link at the bottom of the web-page. Please subscribe.
If you previously installed the Pitchero mobile app you might as well delete it now. Why not place a bookmark of the new web-site in that space instead? And if you were subscribed to the club calendar you might as well delete that calendar as it will no longer work. However, I've put in place an alternative for senior fixtures and our resurgent club events. Instructions for how to subscribe are shown at the bottom of the sitemap included below.
As you can imagine this has been a fair amount of work, so there are still a few holes to fill. The Mini & Youth section needs an update and we need to fill in details about what our great community team are up to, not to mention the new Vipers academy. And age groups U14 above are just getting to grips with how to use GMS for fixtures. But this will all be smoothed out over the next few weeks I'm sure.
If you like what you see please let me know. If you don't well ....., actually I'd still like to know but please be constructive.
