Cambridge 20 -24 Rotherham
By Adrian Fraser
A bright start leads to disappointing finish
The Blood and Sand started brightly with a Darren Fox making ground leading to a try from Joe Green direct from the kickoff. Ben Penfold added the extras. A knock on then gave Rotherham a scrum, and their pack won a penalty try to level the score. Gareth Baxter was able to disrupt the Rotherham line out, giving us useful ball. With the ball in hand, Cambridge were running riot and two more tries followed, one from Mike Ayrton and one from Louis Rawlings. However, the tricky wind took the ball wide each time, so neither were converted and the score was 17-7. Rotherham had not given up and they added a try as time ran out to go in only 17-12 behind.
The first ten minutes of the second half was scoreless, both sides knew the first score was vital. Rotherham changed their line out tactics to evade Gareth and that mean they kept the ball, and were able to work a try to draw level. Ben Penfold kicked a penalty to regain the lead. With ten minutes to go Gareth was sent to the bin following a team warning and Rotherham took the penalty as a scrum and even with debutant centre Ned Brown packing on the flank to even numbers, we gave away a second penalty try. For the last ten minutes Cambridge tried to breach the Rotherham line, but could not find the way to open their defence.
