Cambridge 2's return to top of the league
By Adrian Fraser
Emphatic win away to Chinnor
Cambridge 2's away game to Chinnor 2's started in an unfamiliar vein; Chinnor requesting we played 'uncontested' scrums throughout.
In a nutshell, the only impact was to make the game more open and much quicker from the scrum set piece.
This may have been to Chinnor's advantage, as we expected to perform well at the scrum.
However, once Cambridge had adapted to Chinnor's plan to run and distribute from 8, both our forwards and backs dealt with matters admirably.
Initial pressure was always from Cambridge, but possibly by 'trying too hard', we had to wait for the 23 minute before Tom Harrison finished a promising move with our first try. Lawrence Rayner converted. 0-7 to Cambridge.
Having settled into our play, tries from Joey Patrick (33 mins), Fin Creighton (37 mins), and Matt Waring (37 mins), were all converted by Lawrence.
Half time score; 0-28 to Cambridge.
Half time chat from Max and Foxy was 'more of the same', shut them out' and 'let's make 50'.
The second half started a little like the first; 'over trying' meant we just had to take a breath and focus on what we're good at.
James Hare opened the second half scoring, with a try on 47 minutes. Again converted by Lawrence. 0-35 to Cambridge.
Good support from Sam Collicott (51 mins) led to his try. Lawrence converting. 0-42 to Cambridge.
Having built up an unassailable lead, Cambridge were subjected to the most concerted period of play from Chinnor, who were determined to cross the Cambridge try line.
However, this proved to be possibly the most outstanding period of defensive play from Cambridge in the entire game, if not, this season. Chinnor through everything at Cambridge, only to be resolutely beaten back every time.
Cambridge eventually turned the ball over, leading to roars for a job brilliantly done from the entire team.
I suspect this passage of play, finally knocked the game out of our gallant opposition.
The game was disrupted slightly, by the issue of 4 yellow cards (2 to each team) mainly for 'consistent offences'. Unlucky for all 4 players, who may have just suffered the penalty on another day.
After a back and forth period, the next score came from Keifer Laxton (70 mins). Again converted by Lawrence. 0-49 to Cambridge.
The final score came from Joe Green. From a Chinnor attack, Joe intercepted on our 22, ran the length to score under the posts. Lawrence converting. 0-56 to Cambridge.
So, from the half time chat; 'more of the same', tick box, 'shut them out', tick box, 'make 50 points', tick box.
- Brilliant to score 56 points (bonus point win once again achieved).#
- So pleasing to 'Nil' the opposition.
- Defence, just outstanding.
- Players on the day: All did their jobs well. Owain off early due to a badly gashed leg (mend quickly, young man). Lawrence Rayner, for his 100% kick rate. Keifer for his supreme, tireless efforts.
job well done boys! 5 points, Top of Zoo League 1 again!
