Match report Pre-season vs Cottenham Renegades
September 2nd 2017

Final score cambridge 3rd XV 36 Cottenham Renegades 12

On a bright sunny September day our only pre season game saw us travel with a 25 man squad to play league champion Cottenham Renegades. Their squad wasn’t at full strength but both teams for a good work out in preparation for league games starting next weekend.

We like playing Cottenham as they have the same attitude as we do to rugby at this level, which is to get people playing. The strictures of EC rugby seem counter to this spirit!

So having had the new rules explained before kick off the game which was split into 4 20 min sections began.

Cambridge kept the pressure on for the 1st session, great tackling and defence kept knocking the Renegade runners back.
Cambridge scored first and new joiner Kiwi Adam Bridgeman just missed the conversion.
Renegades came more into the game and some missed tackles in the centre saw them go over with the conversion being scored. They then scored again with a length of field try with great support running and passing that started from a cambridge attack in their own 22 before half time to lead 12-5 at the half.

Coaching staff was pretty pleased with structures, effort and the physicality, we lost Julian to a popped shoulder.

Second half was much the same as the first, both teams playing some good rugby and some dropped balls with players trying to force that last pass. Cambridge gradually gained ascendancy and a couple of try’s stand out. One was Sam Collicott demonstrating great strength to power in from taking a kick off!
Another was Llewelyn Roberts ( there a great welsh name!) known to us as Rhys who played for me as a colt as a flanker, playing on the wing and also showing great speed and strength to shake of numerous tacklers to score.
So a good game entertaining for the spectators, encouraging for the coaching staff and the downside of some injuries.
As usual Cottenham post game hospitality was excellent and we look forward to seeing them in the league games.
