3rd XV 5-17 Shelford 3rd XV
Cup semi final defeat
Cambridgeshire Intermediate County Cup Semi-final
Cambridge 3rd XV 5-17 Shelford 3rd XV
So the County Cup will have a new name on it for the first time in 2 years with Shelford coming out as deserved winners in a close fought match in wet and slippy conditions. It wasn’t a day for running rugby and I’m not looking forward to the laundry this week, twice through the machines looks likely!
Cambridge scored first after a mistake on the ball, a kick through and a great pick up by Richard Just to score.
However failure to catch the ball from the ensuing kick off led to Shelford tying the game up. Cambridge lost Jack Askham to injury when he aggravated a neck injury making a tackle. Damon came on to replace him and obviously had shaken off the effects of the flu with some great tackling.
With the ball covered in mud it was not a day to be a scrum half! The ball didn’t make it along the back line of either team very often all match.
The score remained 5-5 at halftime.
The second half saw a forwards battle and Shelford took the lead with a clever cross-field kick from their flyhalf clearing the cover and being touched down by the left winger. The conversion was missed.
The game was sealed with a try scored from close in and a strong charge that we weren’t able to stop this time. This time the conversion was successful.
Final Score: 5-17
So congratulations to Shelford on a deserved victory, their defence was very good.
Considering how the 2 league fixtures went this season this performance was a huge improvement for Cambridge. Pre game Darren talked about what we were looking for from the boys and we were pleased with how they all responded.
The front 5 put in a huge shift all day, and for most of the match and especially in the second half were in the ascendant and took balls against the head. Sam Copeland having not played for a whole season due to injury made a great return to rugby providing a focal point to the attack and put in some great hits. We look forward to continuing to help him get back to match fitness. Damon we’ve acknowledged already but Matt Jones, Julian, Richard, Lewis, George, Jamie and Jim all tackled and carried hard.
Tough day for the backs but they all put their tackles in and didn’t shirk the muddy stuff!
So we wipe off the mud and get ready for the next round of the EC1 Plate competition next week.
