3rd XV win first league game
3rd xv beat Cantabs 2
Cantabs 2 vs Cambridge 3rd XV
Final score 3-37
The first league game of the season saw the squad make the short trip to Cantabs. Warm up was in bright sunny conditions which by the time the game started had turned into constant rain with thunder ‘banging around’ and ominously dark clouds. A ball that became slippery meant our wide game needed to be modified. It took a while for that to sink in.
A mistake littered half saw no score until the 31 st minute when Cantabs opted to kick a penalty in front of the posts
A serious injury to Cantabs 9, saw the 1 st half extended and it was in the 42 minute that after pressure on the right hand side and a scrum, we disrupted with the shove and debutant Matt Parkes snaffles the loose ball to go over. Callum Traynor converted.
3-7 and that was the score at half time.
Cambridge chose to go back in to the changing rooms and Darren and Captain Matt Jones obviously had words with the squad as the performance in the second half was much improved.
The Cambridge scrum was dominant all game and from a scrum in Cantabs 22 a penalty ensued and Callum took the points.
More pressure in the Cantabs 22 led to another penalty which Callum converted , and put the first of 3 balls onto the railway tracks.
The next score saw Carl Palmer go over from a scrum, Callum converting ( losing another ball)
We then had a slight delay as ref James Marchant ‘lost his pea’ and had to find a new whistle.
We worked all areas of the pitch well in this half and good work down the blindside saw a Carl Go over for his 2nd try, Callum converting and losing the 3rd ball.
Alex Eames was the next to go over, Callum converting of the post
Callum then turned provider to put Alex over again though he missed with the kick
So a satisfactory end result though we stuttered in the first half we hit our stride in the 2nd. The front five went well, and Jed in his last game for us before uni hit his throws in the line out where Matt and Bernie dominated. Bernie and George made some stonking runs all game. Richie and Damon, another one making his debut, added zip and enthusiasm in the back row.
Matt Parkes had a great debut and Callum grew into the 10 role as the game progressed.
Adjusting to the conditions was the challenge for the backs and they got it right eventually with 4 of the tries scored by the centres.
Next week sees us travel to pastures new as we visit Thurston.
