3rd XV draw with Bury
EC 1 West
Bury 3rd XV 14 – 14 Cambridge 3rd XV
We’ve not played Bury for a few seasons, if I recall correctly the last time they dominated the EC 2 west league and were promoted to EC 1. With the league reorganisation we find ourselves meeting again in EC 1west.
Great conditions for rugby, dry and sunny with a slight wind blowing down the slope on the upper level pitch. Bury took the advantage of the slope in the first half. The whole match was a closely contested affair with both sides striving to make a breakthrough. With Harry making his debut at hooker and constrained with a hamstring injury we struggled to win our own ball at the lineout which limited our usual go forward ball. The scrum was solid all game, though some of the ball Sam Burrows had to deal with was a bit scrappy but he had a solid game.
On 20min, good pressure in the Bury 22 saw some good work by Ben Peach and Damon putting Bronik away on the left and he powered over with a really strong run, a feature of his play all game. Adam stroked the conversion over.
Six minutes later Bury were level after a period of sustained pressure as they went over from close in.
The game went to and through with neither side really gaining any dominance. Callum believed he had gone over in the corner but was adjudged to have been in touch.
Half time 7-7
It was the Bury turn to take the lead twenty six minutes into the 2nd half, after a series of scrums in our 22 the Bury #8 who had a strong game going over from close in and the conversion was successful.
Bury had the opportunity to extend their lead from a p nasty but pulled it wide. Despite having the slope Cambridge were struggling to play the game in the right areas. However 10 minutes later good work from forwards and backs saw Ben scoring in the right hand corner. Adam stepped up and made it we conversions in a row to level the game.
Bury had one more opportunity to win the game but hit the post with a penalty.
Final score 14-14.
Darren summed the team effort really well in the post game huddle by not selecting a MOM as everyone had stepped up in a collective team effort. At various times we saw great tackles from Damon, Lucas and Callum. With the squad a little denuded people stepped up to play in different positions, Alex reverted to a forward and held his own, George hooked having not done so for some time and Lewis turned his hand to throwing in.
It was a good game to watch, possibly frustrating to play in (based on the players comments in the bar) but a fair result with the points shared which leaves us 2nd in the table.
