3rd XV win Cup and League double header
3rd xv 54- 21 Bury 3rd xv
Cambridge 3rd XV 54 vs 21 Bury 3rd XV
Cambridgeshire County Cup and EC 1West League game
Clear blue skies but single digit temperatures with a fierce wind blowing down pitch 5 saw Bury vist for a double header fixture, cup and league.
With the club suffering with a bit of a prop crisis, Lewis became the 9th 3rd XV player we’ve seen step up to the 2nds when he benched for them today. He got some minutes and did ok, but then came and benched for us at the end of the second half. Much to his surprise this saw Dick Wallin started with Alex and Jim in the front row and he used all his wiles in a man of the match performance.
Joe McWilliams took charge of the game and we thank him for his time and efforts with the game played in great spirit by both sides.
Cambridge played with the wind in the first half.
Bury drew first blood after1min 30sec, where over eager defence saw us create space which the Bury centre exploited to score under the posts with a successful conversion.
Cambridge then began to get into the game, though fell foul of infractions at the ruck. After 12 min following pressure close to the try line, Matt Jones went over, with Seb chipping over the conversion.
The wind made it hard for Bury to clear their lines but defended hard. Cambridge made numerous breaks but lost the ball in trying to make that last pass. After 21 min a Cambridge lineout on the right was very scrappy but the ball was regained on the floor and then good hands saw Rhuben put through on the left wing to score.
Seb was wide with the conversion.
On 32 min from a solid scrum good hands saw James Knight run a great line to score, the conversion was unsuccessful.
Three minutes later Cambridge utilised the wind with a kick through that saw Rhuben score on the left.
On 38 minutes a good kick and a great chase saw pressure on the Bury back 3 and with the ball won good hands saw Isa score though it went unconverted.
Half time 27-7
The second half saw Bury draw first blood again on 11 minutes, with a slick backs move to score under the posts and a successful conversion.
While Bury entered more pressure the cambridge defense was good. Adam took over the kicking duties after Seb suffered a dead leg. With a penalty awarded on the 22 in front of the post Adam slotted it over.
Bury came back hard but on 22 min as they pressed on our 22m line Etienne intercepted and took it all the way with a couple of great hand offs. Adams conversion hit the post and bounced out.
Cambridge then weren’t able to clear their lines and on 25 min after a dropped pass in our 22 Bury scored and converted.
But Cambridge came storming back and Isa made a great run storming over from the 22 down the right to score. Adam stroked over the conversion.
Cambridge continued to exert pressure and on 35 min after a penalty a messy lineout saw Jim tidy it up and make a strong run and then good hands along the backs saw Adam score on the right which he converted
With the wind dropping and Bury flagging good hands in the backs saw Isa put away again to score, with Adams conversion falling short.
Full Time 54-21
A great team performance much improved from our last game and building on 2weeks of good training sessions. Everyone played their part and worked for each other so a very satisfying performance from the coaching teams viewpoint.
I’ll let Matt have the last word.
“Great performance today lads and a well deserved result. Tight five gave it to them up front, back row were relentless cutting everyone down, half backs controlled the game with their decision making and the backs were sharp putting away the tries. Enjoy the beers boys and roll on the next game!! ??”
