3rd XV with 4 try BP win
Cambridge 3rd XV 24- 5 Saffron Walden 2nd XV
Saffron walden 2nd XV 5-24 Cambridge 3rd XV
So recently Club Co-captain Ean Griffiths received a text from his Mum, complaining of the coverage the 1st team were getting on the web site, and “I don’t want to know how the 3rds are doing!!!!”
SO with apologies to her, here is another match report with some detail on who scored etc.
On the coldest day for rugby so far this season we made the trip to play Walden 2nds. When we played the home fixture Walden had struggled for players particularly in the front row. It was good to see that wasn’t the case today with a squad of 20. This time it was Cambridge that were challenged by injury and availability. Our squad of 19 originally was trimmed by family illness (nothing too serious we were pleased to hear) and work requirements. That saw George Baxter make his seasons debut on the wing and he did well making a final pass to set up a try.
We lost 2 more to injury during the game, Adam damaging his knee ligaments early in the first half and then Alex succumbing to his hamstring later.
So to the game, our plan had always been to keep it tight but when the game finished with us having 13 of the 15 players as recognised forwards it gives you an idea of the game. It was a game littered with errors but immense commitment and effort. Everyone played their part in a good solid team effort.
The only score in the first half went to Cambridge with George Borakis going over from close in. Alex kicked the conversion off the post. 0-7
The 2nd half was very much more of the same with Walden fired up now they were playing down the slope. They made the first break with a strong run and a kick through beating Rhubens covering run to touchdown. The conversion was missed.
Cambridge weathered the storm well and began to exert more pressure. After good forward work down the blindside Isa was put away and he powered over from inside the 22. Dan who had taken over the kicking duties missed the conversion.
With Richard Just at 10, Lucas at 12, Rhuben might have believed he wasn’t going to see much ball, but from a scrum on halfway, Richard threw a beautiful missed pass that put him away and he outran the cover to score. Dan drilled the conversion just wide.
We then saw some passages of play with the front row getting in the act with dummies and offloads, Lewis threw an great dummy and Alex Howell drew and slipped a pass to Isa.
Ten mins from time a crashing no arms hit on Richard by the Walden 15 saw the ball slipped along the line and George Baxter put Dan away nicely and he scored under the posts and converted his own try.
Not flowing rugby by any means but solid hard work and physicality saw the team home. On a frigid day a 4 try bonus point win warmed the support up!
