3rd XV beat Cantab 2nds 52-22
3rd XV finish 4th in EC1 West
Cambridge 3rd XV 52-22 Cantabs 2nd XV
The day was cold but dry and the 3rds were the only team playing at home on the only available pitch. This game was the last one of phase 1 of the EC 1 league which now splits into 4 mini leagues. As always games against Cantabs are hard physical encounters played in good spirit. Today was no different with a yellow card for each side from tackles that referee Pat Chalkin adjudged to be lacking in arms but looked more clumsy and were without dangerous intent. There were a couple of injuries with players removed with head knocks, the worst was to Laurie Medd who unfortunately suffered a fractured neck, diagnosed at Addenbrookes. He was released last night and thank-you to all who supported physio Luke as he looked after him pitchside while we waited for the ambulance to arrive.
Cambridge were looking to shrug off the performance from last week and welcomed back Matt Parkes and Seb Howarth which gave us a better axis at 9-10. Ben looked much more comfortable at his usual 12 position. Wade Schoeman joined the squad looking for game time with the senior squad having been idle since before Christmas, his class showed! Squad rotation saw Sam Collicott playing at 15 and with Sam Burrows on the bench all 3 of our scrum halves got game time.
So to the game
2min after a poor clearing kick and a stolen line out saw Cantabs score on the right, the conversion hit the post
5min A great turnover by peachy followed by good runs and good control by Seb led to the ball being recycled to Dave Dexter on a hard line to crash over, Ben converted.
Seb ran back a clearing kick to feed Chris who went down the left and re-fed Seb who chipped into the mid field and Wade crashed over. Ben missed with the conversion.
Cambridge stole a line out then some good running lines saw Julian tip it to Chrissy, Ben converted
A break from our 22 saw Seb make a chip over the Cantabs defensive line, the 2 cover defenders were defeated by an awful bounce, for them, and Chrissy dribbled through to score. Ben converted
The next score came from a scrum on the Cantabs 5m line, Wade picked and scored, Ben converted.
Good harassing from the backs led to a turn over, Wade then fed Alex who crashed over, Ben converting.
Cantabs started the 2nd half reinvigorated and scored first, good hands saw them score out wide, the conversion missed
Wade back on due to the injury to Laurie scored with Ben converted
Fielding the ball from the kick off Dick Wallin cleverly handed off to Wade and the ball then went wide with Sam Collicott scoring, the conversion was missed.
Cantabs exerted pressure with Cambridge falling off tackles, though the conversion was missed
In the last play of the game further Cantabs pressure saw Seb “hand them” another try under the posts, which was converted.
Final score 52-22
Our thanks to Pat Chalkin for taking charge in the middle. A much better performance than last week sees us finish 4th in the league with Thurston deservedly finishing top followed by Shelford 3rd and Renegades.
So we now move onto the mini league element which will see us visiting new opponents in Eastern Counties.
