3rd XV v Diss II (Saracens)
Final win of the season 47-29
Match Report April 21st 2018
Cambridge 3rd xv 47-29 Diss II
So for our last game of the season we welcomed Diss II to Volac Park. They were our first opponents in the second phase of EC 1. They hammered us on the pitch but were excellent hosts and we had an excellent visit. So we hope we have returned the favour with an enjoyable visit.
Both teams looked a little different to last time and the conditions underfoot were conducive to running rugby. Joe Roberts was yet another colt to make his adult rugby debut, originally planned at wing but when Archie wasn’t available ( WiFi communication issues) he moved to his preferred flanker position. He finished the game at fullback but had an excellent game making some great breaks and tackling his heart out! Last minute changes at hooker due to work injury meant Ali Bowerman stepped in to help us out, and lasted the full 80 minutes, chapeau Ali. Being the last game of the season this was the last game for us for a number of players, Matt Cote, Matt Parkes, Adam Bridgeman, and Richie Jones are all moving on to new jobs in France, back to University, or back home, Ben Peach is moving on to Shelford next season. All will be missed.
Spike Dewing took charge of proceeding and we thank him and CUDDRS.
6min game was going to and fro and some excellent Cambridge scrums finally saw a good break and Stef made a break feeding Adam who converted as well.
10 min good take from the kick off saw a nice nudge from by Stef and then the ball fed along line to Peach who passed out of back of his hand to Sam Burrows, who had a great game on the wing, he went down line and put a cross chip inside for Adam to score, Adam converted.
Great break by Joe got th e ball close to the line, it was then patiently recycled, and 2
2 goes for the line saw Stef go under the posts, Adam converted.
Diss then got back into the game scoring a try on outside
to Another good scrum saw the ball go left, Adam looped and then made the break to score. The conversion went wide.
Good pressure saw Cesar being put away down right, a good cover tackle saw the ball reset and Ben Peach going in in the left corner. Adam converted beautifully.
Penalty in our 22 to Diss saw the ball go wide to the right and scored
Conversion into the wide went wide.
Diss now playing with the wind saw a break by #10 who ran through tackles to score. Conversion went wide
Diss now with their tails up, saw Cambridge struggle to clear their line. A knock on in our 22 saw the ball go through hands and a score in the left, conversion was made.
Cambridge refocused and some good forward drives set the ball up for Steff who broke to the right and fed Adam. His chip kick bounced back into his hands perfectly for hime to score again. Adams low driven conversion was successful.
Diss scored again with a successful conversion
With a scum in the Diss 22, Matt Parkes ignored the call from. Steff for the ball and made the break right forcing himself through the cover defence to score. Adam was deadly from the tee again.
Full time: 47-29
So a good game to watch, scrappy at times but a honours shared over the 2 fixtures. Both teams fielding Colts which augers well for the future at both clubs!
Our joint MoM was Richard Just and Alistair Bowerman, Richard had a great game and Ali as mentioned above stepped up at the last minute to help us out and lasted the 80 minutes, just!
The front 5 were at times dominant pushing Diss off the ball more than once. Gareth and Joe did well in the lineout as did George Baxter when he moved from the wing. Richie Jones in his last game was excellent, a real dynamo! Dex was his usual dynamic self, made some great breaks.
Matt Parkes, kept the forwards driving and provided good service to the backs. Stef marshalled the back line with his usual aplomb, Adam again brought people in on flat lines with Ben making a number of good breaks. We welcomed Cesar back and he made some good runs down the wing, including being flattened by a high tackle ! Sam filling in on the wing has been aggression personified, his crooks chip was superb, and Cote was his usual Mr Dependable!
That’s it, the seasons done, one last curry night, awards next weekend at the last 1st team home game and the Belgian tour! Bit mixed results wise but we’ve had fun and it’s been a pleasure to be part of this great group of guys!
