Leys host the Academy in pre-season friendly
Academy begin the pre-season with a hard fought game at the Leys
The Colts provided a decent test for the Leys in a pre-season warm up match on Saturday. The first outing for the new group of players from the U17 and U18 age groups that form the Academy was always going to be a tough ask as most of the boys have either jobs or are playing school rugby on a Saturday. Despite this Cambridge managed to bring together 15 players to ensure the fixture went ahead.
The Leys were at full complement with 27 available boys. The fixture was payed in 3 periods to allow the Leys to mix their squad up in preparation for their fist cup fixture the following week and also to allow Cambridge to manage their resources carefully.
Although the Leys started with their strongest XV they didn't have the opening exchanges all their own way. Cambridge started strongly and were on top in the early minutes of the first period. The majority of Leys points came from some simple errors on the visitors part, which would be expected of a team blowing off the cobwebs and trying to establish some continuity.
The first two periods eventually went the way of the home team, but in the main the tries were as a result of some organisational confusion from a new team playing together for the first time. By the 3rd period Cambridge had started to show some very encouraging signs and their reward were two well taken tries. The pick of which was a cheeky line-out move from the pack that caught the Leys napping on their line by try scorer Angus Few-Martin
Many areas to work on as the season starts to build, but the commitment from the boys was really encouraging. They stuck to the task and got their reward winning the final period. Thanks goes to the Leys for hosting us and providing some extra bodies when needed. Hopefully we can return the fixture later in the season.
