Saffron Walden Colts too slick for Cambridge
Exciting and entertaining match goes the way of the visitors
Sunday's first home fixture for the Colts didn't go their way as visitors, Saffron Walden, ran out winners 17 - 36.
Cambridge started well and for the initial period of the first half looked to be creating a solid platform to build from. An try in the first 5 minutes confirmed their early dominance and was reward for a series of well put together drives.
However as the game went on Cambridge found it increasingly difficult to get out of their half and were confined to playing much of their rugby in their own 22. Frustration began to tell and without the ability to clear their lines the home team were repeatedly put under increasing pressure. The visitors were able to capitalise on the mistakes made by Cambridge trying to play too much rugby in their own half.
CRFUC 7 - 10 Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden went ahead before half time and didn't look back for the rest of the match. A far better kicking game coupled with the ability to turn defence quickly into attack meant that they scored off a number of Cambridge mistakes.
Cambridge had a large squad and perhaps weren't helped by the many changes that were made in the second half. However it was a perfect opening friendly to give players the chance to try combinations and get used to each other.
Despite a mini resurgence from Cambridge in the final stages of the game Saffron Walden ran out deserved winners.
CRUFC 17 - 36 Saffron Walden
Try Scorers: Joe Roberts, Gareth Edwards, Archie Davison
Conversion: Fred Hughes
The performance had glimpses of some really positive rugby with a fine performances from full back Jack Brosnan and Captain Gareth Edwards. So plenty to be encouraged by for the new Colts squad and much to work on as they build up to their first cup fixture in the coming months.
Training on Thursday at 17:30 at Volac Park with Sunday's fixture TBC.
