Cambridge U15 17 - 12 Colchester

A closely contested game between two evenly matched teams

Cambridge U15 17 - 12 Colchester
Scorers: Hugh Tomkys (2 tries), Tom Sandercock (1 try, 1 conversion)

Cambridge v Colchester was always likely to be a closely fought game as the last time these two teams met was in the U13 Eastern Counties Cup Final, Colchester taking the spoils winning 7-5. The opening twenty minutes of play saw handling errors from both teams as the players settled into their first match of the season, promising attacks either way were rebuffed with strong defence, or ended in a scrum award to the opposition. Good tackling kept line breaks at bay and for a long time it looked like the half might be scoreless as both teams cancelled each other out. However Cambridge scored first through Hugh Tomkys who saw an opportunity at the front of the lineout and crashed over the line with three tacklers on him, the touchline conversion was successful from Tom Sandercock, giving Cambridge the lead, 7-0. Colchester not to be outdone then hit back with a well taken try of their own, the conversion flying just wide, 7-5 at half time.

In the second half Colchester came out playing with more resolve and determination and took the game to Cambridge, but several promising attacks came to nothing as Colchester struggled to break into the Cambridge twenty-two, after repulsing these early attacks Cambridge started to take a more direct route with the ball, which paid dividends as the Colchester defence was forced to condense in closer to the breakdown and Cambridge took advantage with several promising midfield breaks, but the Colchester defence covered well and held Cambridge out, until Hugh saw another opportunity and eventually crashed over from a ruck wide out, the conversion attempt hit the post, 12-5.

Colchester again played some strong rugby recycling well, and after a series of promising attacks took them into the Cambridge half, tapped a penalty and took the direct route through a gap in defence and under the posts, the conversion was good to take the game to 12-12. After some stern words about tackling Cambridge attacked with renewed vigour and with some good passing and offloading found themselves in the ascendancy, then after a threatening dash for the line by Daniel Mhlanga was repulsed, the ball was moved well to the left through at multiple pairs of hands, fixing defenders and passing, for Tom Sandercock to score wide out from full-back, his conversion flew just wide of the posts, 17-12. Colchester had a few remaining chances in the final minutes as they pushed deep into the Cambridge half, but a scrambling defence kept them at bay and finally after a penalty award Cambridge tapped the ball and cleared to touch to end the game.
