Cambridge U14 continue to improve with win over Newmarket
Cambridge U14 - 35 v Newmarket - 7
Cambridge welcomed a strong Newmarket team on Sunday; the day was sunny and the players had the opportunity to play on the main club pitch. The match was played over four 12-minute quarters and Cambridge’s performance improved steadily as the team took on board the coaches’ feedback and adapted to their opponents’ style of play.
After a quick Cambridge try from a great break by Matthew Mangel, Newmarket responded with a converted try, but a second great run by Matthew ensured that Cambridge finished the first quarter leading 10 – 7. The second quarter saw Cambridge being more disciplined at the breakdown and also closing down the space more aggressively, which meant that Newmarket never came close to the Cambridge try line, and the hosts extended their lead. However, Newmarket did manage to turn the ball over a few times with a very good use of the maul. The third period saw a cheeky try from Cambridge scrumhalf and more tries from the centres. But the best play from Cambridge was still to come, and in the last quarter Cambridge brought together aggressive defence, some really good handling and sharp passing to score some great team tries.
All in all, this latest performance confirms the excellent signs showed by the team by winning the first fixture with Shelford and drawing a hard match against Colchester. The team is growing in confidence and its style of play, showing more and more structure and composure; the players are taking on board feedback and reacting swiftly to the game conditions.
Always good to welcome back friends from previous years and it was fun seeing our very own Dylan Lowe playing 15. You may notice him featured in a few photo's fearlessly taking on some of our stronger runners. As always, Dylan rarely shied away from a tackle!
