Welcome to Cambridge Rugby club and the Under 8s team page.
This is one of the youngest age groupings and is the chance for budding young althetes to come and try Rugby. It is also the chance for them to bring their families and experience everything Cambridge Rugby Club has to offer. Rugby is a fun game and our principal aim is to encourage children to embrace that fun and teach them the ethos of the game - fair play and respect for your coaches, colleagues and opponents. Girls and boys will be introduced to tag rugby. The RFU has recently taken a good look at rugby for this age group and has developed a new, structured approach to introducing the game. An important feature of the training at this age is to develop passing, catching and spatial awareness.
Training is held at Cambridge RUFC, Volac Park, Granchester Road, Cambridge, CB3 9ED on Sundays from 9:30-10:30am, except school holidays. The fixture list is available on the club website and gives the dates for all training and match day fixtures for the season that runs September to May. More detailed information and further updates can be obtained from the Pitchero app or via emailing the team's lead coach Michael Burcher.
The Under 8’s are part of the minis section at the club, which is the Under 7 – Under 10 age group. We aim to provide a series of age-specific modified rugby games and drills. These modified rugby games progressively develop the individual skills, fitness, teamwork and personal and social skills. We also work on rugby’s 5 core values of Team Spirit, Discipline, Sportsmanship, Enjoyment and Respect. Tag rugby is played at this level, it is non-contact and the main aim is to have fun and learn through practice and play. Matches are played with a maximum of 6 players, on a maximum pitch size of 45x22m with a maximum of 6 tags to score a try.
This is also the age group where many parents first become involved with Cambridge Rugby club. The Mini & Youth section is run entirely by parent volunteers and it is extremely rewarding.
If you would like to help coach or become the age group administrator or even get the team's social diary underway, please speak to Michael Burcher in the first instance.
