The postponement of our Greene King Cup match on 13
March
allowed the Exiles to pause for breath and to take stock of where we
are, as we
head towards the last month of the season.
The good news is that we are still well-placed on
both the
League and Cup fronts. We sit second in
the Greene King Deuxieme Nord league and we are in the semi-final of the
Cup
competition.
Our League destiny is in our own hands. While it is unlikely that the league leaders
can now be knocked off the top perch, we will finish second if we win
our
remaining three games. Our form suggests
that we are capable of doing this. With
third-placed Cottenham Renegades only one point behind us, we do not
want to slip
up during the run-in (even though we have a game in hand over them).
The quarter-final that would have decided our
semi-final
opponent was postponed and hence our rest weekend. We
will have to wait a few more days to see
who stands between us and a place in the Final at Ely on 24 April.
We certainly believe that we have the momentum to
finish the
season in winning style. We have lost
just once in 2010 – to the very capable league leaders, Saffron Walden. (We lost only twice in the first half of the
season – on each occasion, by only a single point – and one of those
games was
a friendly where we were more interested in blooding debutants than in
merely
winning.) We have a large squad. So
far, 63 players have pulled on an Exiles’
shirt this season. We have seen some
players graduate to the Adventurers XV.
And we have seen a strong Exiles’ identity emerge, aided by the
structure that skipper Ed Naylor, vice-captain Richard Just and coach
Guy
Mulley have brought to proceedings. On
the playing field, the more experienced players have been able to pass
on their
expertise to the younger players, and the mixture of youth and
experience is
something that has set us apart from many of our opponents.
And we are always on the look-out for new players. So, if you or someone you know is thinking
about playing some rugby, do get in touch.
